The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the world unspeakable tragedy. Millions have died, and many millions more have been left to swim in bottomless grief. Livelihoods, careers, and even entire economies have been crushed.
But like any great tragedy, this pandemic has also been characterized by noble, even heroic acts. Medical research has accelerated beyond what anyone thought possible, and the nurses and doctors and others who provide care have seemed superhuman in their endurance.
But everyone has been affected by this virus, whether they or their loved ones have been sick or not. Everyone has felt discouragement and stress, and many communities have naturally turned inward and forged closer connections with each other. Newly involved in each others' lives, they've learned to help each other and lift each other up. That's what the Sheltered Trilogy is all about. A group of neighbors in Oakland, California come together with warm hearts and helping hands, and find ways to support each other through illness, homelessness, climate change, and racial reckoning.
The first two books, Sheltered and Grounded, cover the events of 2020. The third, Inspired, to be released in fall, 2022, carries the characters all the way through 2021, as they solve some problems, discover new ideas, figure out new paths, and face the future with a new point of view.
Where to buy them?
I love it when readers go into their local indie bookstore and request one of my books. It's great when we can support our local businesses, and the concept of skilled and knowledgeable sellers. (Also, I have a fantasy that some bookstore owner will say "Hmmm, this looks interesting. Maybe I should order a few copies and see what happens.”)
Having said that, it's not always feasible to do that, and frankly I'm thrilled if you buy it anywhere. The eBook and the paperback are available from most online booksellers.
Alternatively, my publisher is BookBaby, and you can purchase directly from them. Thanks for asking!

In the spring of 2020 seven counties in the San Francisco Bay Area issue a regional stay-at-home order— and for millions, life changes overnight. In a quiet neighborhood in Oakland, Rachel and Carlos must navigate the most disastrous public health crisis in a century while keeping their new romance alive. As the pandemic rages across the world they realize their harmonious little block is not a refuge. In the midst of global chaos, one community must work to mitigate despair and build optimism.
Over the course of just a few weeks as the world changes around them, Carlos and Rachel learn from their friends and family that building a better future begins at a local level.
Sheltered tells the story of the beginning of the pandemic, and takes place March through May of 2020.

The second book in the Sheltered series, Grounded continues the story of Rachel and Carlos, living on the top floor of his late abuela's home as they try to stay safe during the Covid-19 pandemic. The house is full, with the Nguyễns occupying the main floor and the Montessas in the basement.
Up and down the block, their neighbors lead their changed lives and cope with the problems of the world that intrude into their quiet street.
2020 is a year full of crises: Health systems and social systems strained beyond their capacity. The death of George Floyd and others killed by police spur the Black Lives Matter demonstrations and White supremacist counter protests. Climate change has brought wildfires and toxic air. Toxic politics and a disputed election has everyone on edge. Neighbors all feel the effects, but on this block, they depend on each other and find ways to raise each other up.
Grounded tells the story of the second half of 2020, June through December.

In the third book in the Sheltered pandemic trilogy, Carlos, the gifted first grandson in the extended Gomez family, considers a path that may disappoint them. Rachel, the only child of a single mother, discovers something surprising about her roots, even as she is finding a new sense of purpose in her life. All around them, neighbors and family are faced with dilemmas small and large, personal and global, that cause them to re-think their futures. As they find their footing in a pandemic-changed world, the one thing they can all count on is the support of their community.
Will Miguel finish high school and fulfill his college dreams? Will Hila get her family out of Afghanistan before the US withdrawal? When will the Nguyen family get re-settled in their newly rebuilt home after the fire that destroyed their old one? Will Mateo, a Dreamer, be able to become a citizen, or will he be deported to a country he's never known? Every house on the block has a story, and they intertwine as neighbors lift each other up.
Inspired tells the story of 2021.
